Yes, we’re taking the Gratis Basis camera and our selves to beautiful Iceland! Why Iceland? Well, because the people of Iceland got fed up with fear, scarcity, competition, conflict and control, and have willed to co-create a world based on trust, abundance, cooperation, harmony and freedom in their country! They did exactly what Gratis Basis is saying needs to happen right now everywhere on planet Earth. There may be pockets of individuals and communities making the shift, but here’s a whole entire country where the people have begun living in a new paradigm. It certainly didn’t happen overnight. Iceland, the island nation with a population of just over 330,000 have certainly been through a lot in the last couple of years… In 2008 Iceland had an epic economic collapse. The people lost most of their savings and faced mortgages and debt they couldn’t pay off. At one time, their debt to income ration was 240%. There were protests. Lots of angry protests. And the people won. The people of Iceland demanded indictment of their prime minister for his role in the crisis. The chief executives of the 3 biggest banks were arrested. There were over 200 criminal charges for the [...]

What I came to understand from my life lessons is when you keep doing things that are not your life’s purpose, something inside you will nudge you, a gut feeling, if you will. And it continues to nudge you until you realize and get engaged in what you came here for. So you have to honor that gut feeling. Most of us keep ourselves busy distracting our attention from these gut feelings, even though we somehow know it at the back of our minds. Get out of the daily routine, take time, quiet your mind and listen to your inner voice. When you do this, don’t let your logical mind tell you why you can’t do this and that. Our mind is conditioned to think what our society wants us to believe as norms. Just keep your focus on how you feel, not what you think. When you follow that inner guidance, you’ll be led to your life’s purpose and you’ll know it when it happens, because you will start living authentically. To listen to your inner voice, I find that meditation is very effective. When you hear ‘meditation’ or ‘Zazen’, it may sound intimidating, but there is no need [...]

Here is a great short film with wise words from Mark Boyle. That we need money to live – like it or not – is a self-evident truism. Right? Not anymore. Drawing on almost three years of experience as ‘The Moneyless Man’, Mark Boyle not only demystifies money and the system that binds us to it, he also explains how liberating, easy and enjoyable it is to live with less of it. Mark Boyle’s new book, The Moneyless Manifesto explores in-depth the social, personal, ecological and economic reasons why we may want to transition beyond money into a localised, gift-based economic model. In it he also provides a vast toolkit of ways you can thrive with little (or no) money. Click here for more information and to read the book.

We see the world through colored lenses. Nothing in this world has any intrinsic value or meaning as its attribute. It is only our perception – our way of regarding, understanding, or interpreting something – that gives meaning or value to whatever we see or experience. Then, where do our perceptions come from? Throughout childhood, we are taught by our parents and teachers certain beliefs, values and practices that are important to our families and communities. Whether those beliefs are right or wrong is a secondary matter here. However, those beliefs, values and practices become the basis of the viewpoints from which we judge everything we experience in this world. When ideas and thoughts are repeatedly taught, especially from a young age, they seep into the subconscious where they will no longer be questioned. You start to believe they are the truths, the only truths that others should also believe in too. That’s why it is never easy to overwrite them. However, when we are given a glimpse of an alternative possibility that goes against what we have always believed to be the only reality, a door to a new reality opens up and we start to think from a [...]

In his latest book, Charles Eisenstein traces the history of money from ancient gift economies to modern capitalism, revealing how the money system has contributed to alienation, competition, and scarcity, destroyed community, and necessitated endless growth. Today, these trends have reached their extreme – but in the wake of their collapse, we may find great opportunity to transition to a more connected, ecological, and sustainable way of being. In this wonderful short film, Charles Eisenstein’s thoughts, on which his book ‘Sacred Economics’ is based, come to life – the idea of a gift economy is plausible, and the awakening of society and the birth of a new world reality are upon us. It’s a beautiful message we can all relate to in some way and understand. Click here for more on Charles Eisenstein and to read the book ‘Sacred Economics’ for free.

Bronnie Ware is a writer and songwriter from Australia and the author of the newly released book ‘The Top Five Regrets of the Dying’. Bronnie spent several years as a caregiver for dying people. Her patients were those who had gone home to die. Some incredibly special times were shared and she was with them for the last three to twelve weeks of their lives. Bronnie’s message is simple yet so powerful: Life is a choice. It is YOUR life. Choose consciously, choose wisely, choose honestly. Choose happiness. “People grow a lot when they are faced with their own mortality. I learnt never to underestimate someone’s capacity for growth. Some changes were phenomenal. Each experienced a variety of emotions, as expected, denial, fear, anger, remorse, more denial and eventually acceptance. Every single patient found their peace before they departed though, every one of them.” When questioned about any regrets they had or anything they would do differently, common themes surfaced again and again. Here are the most common five regrets of the dying: 1. I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me. This was the most common regret [...]

This short excerpt from the movie ‘Zeitgeist: Addendum’ by Peter Joseph, questions the current monetary system as it addresses the areas of: Work, Incentive, Civilization. It introduces the resource based economy, a system that works for the common good of everyone. Visionary and self-taught architect, Jacques Fresco’s Venus Project offers a comprehensive plan for social reclamation in which human beings, technology and nature will be able to coexist in a long term, sustainable state of dynamic equilibrium. In this video, Jacques Fresco addresses the falseness of the current monetary system and explains his ideal world that incorporates a resource-based system where there is no money, or any other form of bartering exchange.
Nipun Mehta created “Smile Cards” in 2003 as a fun way to prove the interconnections of life. What started out as ‘positive pranks’, receiving a Smile Card would mean that you have been tagged with a random act of kindness, totally unconditional and from an anonymous stranger. Based on ‘pay it forward’, by receiving kindness and a Smile Card from someone, you would then offer a random act of kindness and the card to someone else, asking them to keep it going. In this video interview, Nipun comments on how modern culture makes people think they need to acquire things in order to feel complete. He recalls the ancient idea shared by many cultures that in giving you are fulfilled – a simple truth forgotten. Modern life as we know it is undoubtedly self-centered and commercial. Smile Cards help to remind of those little things that would otherwise be considered common human decency. Those very acts that in our modern culture need to be rekindled and reworked into people’s lives as random acts of kindness to remind us all on a soul-level how it really feels to be giving and fulfilled. Feeling is believing! To date, 1,450,000 cards have been [...]

The Transition concept emerged from work that permaculture designer Rob Hopkins had done with the students of Kinsale Further Education College, UK in writing an “Energy Descent Action Plan”. This looked at across-the-board creative adaptations in the realms of energy production, health, education, economy and agriculture as a “road map” to a sustainable future for the town. That was in 2005. Today, Transition Towns (also known as transition network or transition movement) is a grassroots network of communities that are working to build resilience in response to peak oil, climate destruction, and economic instability. As of 2010, transition initiatives generally began including the global financial crisis as a third aspect beside peak oil and climate change. Initially, this has been linked to the creation of a series of local currencies in transition towns in the UK, including the Totnes pound, the Lewes pound, the Stroud pound, the Bristol pound, as well as the Brixton pound in London. The idea has taken off and now includes: 463 official initiatives worldwide 43 countries 139 official US initiatives 35 US states 13 languages Transition is one manifestation of the idea that local action can change the world; one attempt to create a supportive, [...]

How can we be free? Why do we make it so difficult for ourselves to be simply free? We buy into the collective notion that we all have to have our share of suffering, otherwise it’s not fair. We believe we have to ‘earn’ our way to success and freedom. That concept of ‘earning’ is through hardship and suffering. We are raised to believe in hardship for rewards. It is true that a small group of people in power want us to believe in all that, but we are the ones who are actually supporting that idea even though we don’t like it. Why do we do that? We don’t have to support it. We can actually create a different reality, if we all realize that it is possible to do so. All we have to do is to wake up and realize that it is possible to do so. It’s that simple. That’s why I’m optimistic. Because I see more and more people are waking up now all around the world. Imagine that we are all awake, and visualize what kind of wonderful world it will be. Now hold that thought and the feeling for as long as possible. [...]
